Frabjous Day

25 Oct 2010

Diary: Week 17 October – 23 October

Got up 1415 on average.

52 articles. $135.56. Slightly below average week, but not terrible.

Walked 4.4 hours.

Role playing!

Spent the evening role-playing with Will, Ruth, Niamh, James, Martin, Pearse:

A variety of excellent oddness. Got on well with everyone, including at least three people I did not otherwise know well, and didn’t even realise until after I’d got home that I was rather a lot more outwards and extraverted than normal. Strange, that, but not unwelcome.

Played some guitar. Recorded 16 minutes of noodling:

With my proper amp, no less. Sounds good. Bit sloppy. Need to practice.

18 Oct 2010

Diary: Week 10 October – 16 October

Got up 1540 on average.

68 articles. Something like $167.43, though I haven’t gotten my share yet.

Pretty good week, really, workwise. Much better than last.

Watched all three original Star Wars films:

Really good. I’d forgotten, and I think I’d been tainted somewhat by the prequels.

Came across RMC Hexaphonic guitar pickups:

I have wild plans for all sorts of clever digital processing of hexaphonic guitar signals. These might do the trick much more conveniently than the Graph Tech model I was looking at previously.

Recorded a whole lot of voice stuff:

Discovered that the back room works really well as an alternative to the shower for singing.

Voice seems to be making good progress, tone-wise.

Wrote a bit of a silly song called “Sleep Deprivation”. At 5am.

10 Oct 2010

Diary: Week 03 October – 09 October

Got up 1450 on average.

71 articles submitted.

Got paid $161.19 by TCA. Transferred €100. Got my €50.

Had a pretty poor week at work, TBH:

It was as though there was no good work available.

Basically, someone posted an enormous number of rubbish work orders that I couldn’t complete at anything better than €4 an hour, so I gave up and did some rewrites instead, which was easier and not all that bad, but it still took its toll.

Seems to be picking up again as I write this, though.

Read article on poor couple on $450,000 a year:

In other words, some people have no frickin’ perspective.

Not much singing, but some improvement:

Learned how to improve the middle of my range, under the break.

No actual movement on improving the break itself, though.

Still, much stronger just beneath it.

Some guitar. Going well, but I haven’t been actually practicing carefully.

Watched some videos of David Torn:

Experimental guitar player. Not entirely my thing, but very clever, some of it.

Watched Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Started walking again, a little. 2 hours this week (in two days).

3 Oct 2010

Diary: Week 26 September – 02 October

Got up 1350 on average.

Submitted 60 articles to Content Authority.

Got paid $132.54 by TCA.

Transferred €100 to Mum’s bank account. Hasn’t come through yet.

Was locked out of TCA for a couple of days:

Hence the lower-than-ideal income.

Turned out to be a router problem. I just turned it off and on again and it worked.

One bad day at work. Nothing good available. No big deal though.

Lots of guitar and singing practice.

26 Sep 2010

Diary: Week 19 September – 25 September

Wake-up time all over the place, including two overnights; no data.

Submitted 37 articles to Content Authority.

Got paid $163.54 by TCA.

Transferred €100 to Mum’s bank account, got €50 myself.

Learned a bit of Muse’s “Hyper Music” on guitar.

Had a dream which was a Doctor Who/Star Wars hybrid:

One of the most amazing dreams I’ve ever had – must get around to writing it down.

Saw “Scott Pilgrim…” with Ruth:

Entertaining rubbish, worth a watch. Very well done.

Practiced singing twice:

Improving lots, really great high notes.

Broke second tuner on guitar:

Now limping along with only four functional tuners. I have to tune using a pliers…

There has been a dearth of articles on TCA. I’m getting by, though:

After doing some math I’ve figured out that I may well be writing nearly 5% of all the articles they publish… That’s rather a lot.

There has been a number of article droughts lasting a few hours each. I find though that things normally balance out and I end up getting enough done.

Fingers hurt from guitar, resuming productivity generally?

Starting the writing job killed my productivity somewhat, but I feel like I’m getting back on top of things now, having adjusted a bit, and I’m starting to play guitar again. I may well start writing properly again soon. I still have a number of articles half-done.

19 Sep 2010

Diary: Week 12 September – 18 September

Got up 1440 on average.

Submitted 59 articles to Content Authority.

First payday, received $72.85 from Content Authority.

Set up Paypal with Mum’s bank account and transferred €70.

Had a dodgy couple of days at work:

Got a load of revision requests on a couple of articles. Entirely my fault. Have resolved a few things:

1. I really don’t like getting negative reviews of my work. It’s not that I can’t handle criticism, it’s more subtle than that. Specifically:

2. The one thing I hate and fear above all else is being thought incompetent.

3. I have resolved to be a lot more careful about the work I submit.

13 Sep 2010

Diary: Week 05 September – 11 September

Got up 1410 on average.

Submitted about 42 articles to Content Authority.

Records incomplete – it was more than 36.

Was upgraded to Tier 2 for Content Authority.

Walked 2 times with friends.

7 Sep 2010

Diary: Week 29 August – 04 September

Was away for a week catsitting. Kept no records.

Read Malcolm Gladwell’s “Outliers”:

Really great, consider it required reading for everyone.

Watched a load of TV:

24;

Have I Got News For You;

Mock the Week;

Salvage Squad;

Top Gear;

Robot Wars;

the list goes on.

7 Sep 2010

Diary: Week 22 August – 28 August

Got up 1400 on average.

Another slow week.

Submitted a resume to Essayedge.org:

Heard nothing back.

Watched “Collateral”:

It was ok.

Submitted some articles to the Content Authority:

1700 words in 72 minutes, total.

22 Aug 2010

Diary: Week 15 August – 21 August

Another week with nothing much done.

This doesn’t bother me enormously. I’m feeling stressed and uncomfortable – it’s hardly surprising that I’m not very creative, and understanding that this is a difficult transition period is a better idea than beating myself up over being unproductive.

Got up 1205 on average.

Tried to reach welfare office in Maynooth – no reply.

Received €18.43 from Content Authority.

Worked on CV. Got a good bit done.
